Assign Configurations with Configuration Rules

Use Configuration Rules in Configure to automatically assign configurations to systems based on SQL‑driven criteria such as installed software or system attributes.

Manually assigning configurations to systems can be tedious if there are a lot of systems. The Config Rules tab at the top of the Assignments page in Configure allows us to use a SQL statement to assign configurations to systems based on parameters such as operating system or system model. For example, suppose all of the machines in the patient care wing of a hospital run an application called MEDHOST. We could create a rule that assigns the patient care configuration to every system that has MEDHOST installed.

  1. To do this, click the plus sign and choose the appropriate template; in this case, we're using “software package installed.”

  2. Fill in the required parameters and test the SQL to ensure that the correct machines are being returned.

  3. Click the OK button, then choose the desired configuration from the dropdown list.

  4. Click the Save Changes button.

Be aware that these rules will override any manual selection from the Assignments page.

Configure rules are processed once every 24 hours and are applied from top to bottom. Since a system can only have one configuration, the configuration specified in the last rule takes precedence.
