Configure the Experience Index

Watch a quick overview or read the detailed information below.

Configuring the Experience Index lets you match the score to the priorities of your environment. The default sensors, impact values, and sensor variable values reflect what Lakeside considers normally good or bad for a digital experience. You can change them in three ways:

  • Include a sensor in the Experience Index or exclude it, for all systems or for the systems in a role.

  • Set the impact minutes of a sensor, from 1 to 5.

  • Edit the sensor variable values that decide when a sensor triggers.

Disabling a sensor for Experience Index does not turn the sensor off. It only removes its impact contribution to the score. The sensor continues to collect data and remains available in investigative workflows.

A change affects the Experience Index calculation from that point onward and does not change historical data.

Before You Change Sensor Settings

Start by baselining your environment with the default Experience Index configuration. A baseline is the set of Experience Index results that your environment produces with the default sensors and impact values, so you do not need to configure anything first. Change a sensor setting only when the baseline and other data from your environment show that a default does not fit.

Complete these steps before you change a sensor:

  1. Review the Experience Index results of your environment with the default configuration. Allow at least 2 to 3 weeks after you deploy SysTrack Agent 11.8 or later, so that SysTrack collects enough data for a baseline. Environments and user populations differ, so check the groups that matter to you, for example VIP users and typical users.

  2. Compare the Experience Index with user feedback. If users report a good experience but the Experience Index is low, open Reliability Engineering and review the sensors that add impact for those systems.

  3. Review historical data in Visualizer or Natural Language Query Builder to see how those sensors behave over time in your environment.

  4. Write down what you plan to change and why: the sensor, the current value, the new value, and the result you expect. After you make the change, record it (see Record Every Change).

IMPORTANT: Disabling a sensor or lowering its impact minutes raises the Experience Index without changing the experience of your users. Make a change only when the sensor does not reflect an issue that matters in your environment.

Record Every Change

The Sensor management page shows the Last modified and Last modified by columns for each sensor. They show only the latest change and keep no history. SysTrack does not keep the previous value of a sensor variable. Record each change yourself, including the date, the sensor, the old and new values, and the reason. For example, add a note about the change to a related problem in Reliability Engineering (see Work with Problems). Later, you can compare the date of the change with the trend of the Experience Index.

Change Sensor Settings for All Systems

To include or exclude a sensor, or to set its impact minutes, for all systems:

  1. Go to Configure > Sensor Configuration > Management.

  2. At the top of the page, select the Experience Index perspective.

  3. Select the lock to enable editing.

  4. Click a sensor name.

  5. In the Experience Index tab, turn Experience Index Inclusion on or off, or move the Impact Minutes slider.

  6. Click Update Sensor Configuration at the top of the page.

For bulk actions, editing sensor variable values, and the other tabs, see Sensor Management.

Change Sensor Settings by Role

To exclude sensors from the Experience Index score for the systems assigned to a role:

  1. Go to Configure > System Configuration > Roles > Additional Settings > Experience Index.

  2. Select a role.

  3. Clear the checkboxes for the sensors you want to exclude from the Experience Index.

A cleared checkbox that you cannot change means that the sensor is already excluded for all systems on the Sensor Management page. An excluded sensor continues to collect data.

For details, see Experience Index in Roles.
