Find Hardware Allocation Details

This video demonstrates how to use the Hardware Observation and Desktop Visualizer to assess hardware capacity, asset inventory, operating system details, and resource outliers across groups and individual systems.

Video Transcript

The Hardware Observation is a great tool for planning, as it shows asset and configuration data averaged across the different groups.

From a sizing standpoint, I can see what my systems are capable of, what types of assets we have, and what my groups have. The Operating System Details perspective shows patching information, which can indicate vulnerability and potential security risk. In the Computer Name column, we have another blue dot. Since we are looking at group data, clicking on the FQDN of the desktop group will take us a little closer to the data in the Desktop Visualizer.

Now that we have drilled into the Desktop Visualizer, there are a few things that stand out. First, we are able to see capacity on a system-by-system basis grouped by operating system, with more specific information about system hardware, including the model, chassis, and serial number of each system. Also, since we drilled into our desktop group, I can see in the upper right-hand corner that my data is already narrowed down to just that single group. I can click the dropdown menu and select a different group, or I can choose to view data for all systems.

If I want to see a more simplified view of hardware capacity, I can choose the Processor and Memory Capacity perspective from the center menu bar, and I can easily see where average capacity lies in the bubble graph and which user systems are outliers in CPU or memory capacity. I have a couple of machines that have massive CPU capacity but are on the lower end for memory.
