File Information Tool
Resolve's File Information tool finds all the files on the selected focus system, groups them by file extension, and provides file age and file size data for each file extension. This data is collected once a week. The Data Acquired field at the top of the page displays the collection date. The tool provides options so that you can customize how the data is displayed.
To make the data easier to grasp, the tool uses a treemap graph. The default treemap settings show the file count for the top 30 file extensions, classified by size. The Settings menu (on the left) lets you change the following:
-
Switch to a grid display (with its own settings).
-
Display the other file extensions not in the top 30.
-
Classify by age or not at all.
-
Display file size instead of file count in the treemap.
Use the Filters menu options to narrow which extensions appear. A default filter value of 2 is used for Age Number New, Storage Size Medium (MB), and Storage Size Small (MB). The File Extension field lets you display data for just one extension. You might need to change other settings to prevent the extension specified from being filtered out.
For example, you might configure a grid display to show file age and storage, including data for all files on the system with a .dll extension. This data is first broken down by Age and by Size. The Age of a file is classified as New, Aging, or Old. The Size of a file is classified as Small, Medium, or Large. The number of files with the extension and their aggregate size are provided for each Age and Size classification.
The following table defines the default range of the Age classification. You can change the default ranges via the Deployment Tool.
New | Aging | Old |
---|---|---|
Newer than 30 days | Between 30 days and 1 year | Older than 1 year |
The following table defines the default range of the Size classification. You can change the default ranges via the Deployment Tool.
Small | Medium | Large |
---|---|---|
Less than 100 KB (100,000 bytes) |
Between 100 KB and 1 GB (100,000 and 1,000,000,000 bytes) |
Greater than 1 GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) |
Use the File Information Tool Display Options
The Grid view's four radio buttons enable you to configure the following:
- Show File Data Sums: For each file extension, list the total number of files and their total amount of storage. Two filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by number of files or aggregate size of those files.
- Show File Age: For each file extension, list age information broken down into number of files of each age and aggregate size of files of each age. Six filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by various number, size, and age combinations.
- Show File Storage: For each file extension, list storage information broken down into number of files of each size category and aggregate storage size of each size category. Six filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by various number, storage size, and size category combinations.
- Show File Age and Storage: For each file extension, list both age and storage information. This is a combination of the previous two buttons.
For example, you might select Show File Storage to show only file size data.
You might also remove the individual classification values and instead display one total value by selecting the Show File Data Sums option. The Number column would show the sum of the number of large, medium, and small files. Likewise, the Size column would show the sum of the file sizes of large, medium, and small files.
The Filters section of the Settings menu provides options for filtering column data for each classification by minimum total number of files and by minimum total number of megabytes (MB), depending on the classifications being displayed. To specify a minimum value, use the up and down arrows or enter a value directly. The table filters dynamically as you specify filter values.
You can sort the table data by file Extension or by a selected Age or Storage column. To sort the data, click the desired column header. The direction of the arrow indicates whether the column is sorted in ascending or descending order. Click the Filter button to create more complex filters of the displayed data.
