You can override sensor variable values for any system assigned to the selected role. To trigger a sensor under different conditions for specific systems, add variable overrides to the roles that those systems use. The new value must differ from the current value of the variable. Reverting the variable removes it from the override list. ## Add a New Variable To add a new variable: 1. Go to **Configure** > **System Configuration** > **Roles**. 2. Click the lock icon in the upper-right corner to unlock Configure for editing. 3. Select the role. 4. From the **Additional Settings** list, select **Variables**. 5. Click **Add Variable**. ![Section for overriding sensor variable values with an option to add new variables.](https://cdn.document360.io/87d11426-6b1f-4b19-b593-b71e55a81af3/Images/Documentation/variables_add-a-variable.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T16%3A18%3A13Z&se=2026-11-08T17%3A18%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=hONTQcG2SrNsewKk%2BouoJ3dmFhBcHXbu81QLWXAiq1Q%3D) 6. In the **Add Variables** dialog box, select the variables to add to the role and enter a new value for each. ![Adding variables with specific values and constraints in a software interface.](https://cdn.document360.io/87d11426-6b1f-4b19-b593-b71e55a81af3/Images/Documentation/variables_add-multiple-variables.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T16%3A18%3A13Z&se=2026-11-08T17%3A18%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=hONTQcG2SrNsewKk%2BouoJ3dmFhBcHXbu81QLWXAiq1Q%3D) 7. Click **Add**. 8. Click **Save Changes** in the upper-right corner. ![Interface showing options to edit information with a prominent 'Save Changes' button.](https://cdn.document360.io/87d11426-6b1f-4b19-b593-b71e55a81af3/Images/Documentation/variables_save-changes.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T16%3A18%3A13Z&se=2026-11-08T17%3A18%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=hONTQcG2SrNsewKk%2BouoJ3dmFhBcHXbu81QLWXAiq1Q%3D) ## Change Sensor Variables To change a variable override in a role, open the **Variables** settings of the role as in [Add a New Variable](/documentation/docs/variables#add-a-new-variable) above, enter the new value for the variable, and click **Save Changes**. To remove an override, revert the variable. Systems that use the role apply the change the next time they read their configuration. To apply it right away, run **Read Configuration** on those systems. See [Operations: Command Dashboard](/documentation/docs/operations-command-dashboard). If a variable override doesn't seem to apply, check how the variable expects its values. For an example, see [Nonstandard Shared Folder Sensor Issue](/documentation/docs/nonstandard-shared-folder-sensor-issue).
