Resolve's File Information tool finds all the files on the selected focus system, groups them by file extension, and provides file age and file size data for each file extension. This data is collected once a week. The Data Acquired field at the top of the page displays the collection date.
You can customize how the data is displayed using the Settings menu.
File Classification
In the File Information tool, files are categorized by Age and Size to help you analyze storage and usage patterns. You can change the default ranges using the Deployment Tool.
Default Age Categories
The Age classification is based on the last access time, not the creation or modification date.
New | Aging | Old |
|---|---|---|
Newer than 30 days | Between 30 days and 1 year | Older than 1 year |
Default Size Categories
Small | Medium | Large |
|---|---|---|
Less than 100 KB (100,000 bytes) | Between 100 KB and 1 GB (100,000 and 1,000,000,000 bytes) | Greater than 1 GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) |
Display Modes
The File Information tool offers two display modes:
Treemap: Displays file extensions as rectangles, sized by file count and color-coded by file type. This view provides a visual summary of file distribution.
Grid: Displays detailed file data in a table format. Each row represents a file extension, with columns showing file age and size breakdowns.
Use the Settings menu to switch between views and adjust display options.
Treemap Settings
The following options are available for the treemap view:
Group:
Top 30: Displays the 30 most common file extensions on the system, based on file count or size.
Others: Displays all file extensions beyond the top 30.
Categorize By:
Size: Groups files by size category—Small, Medium, or Large—based on the thresholds.
Age: Groups files by age category—New, Aging, or Old—based on the last access time.
None: Disables categorization.
Display:
File Count: Shows the number of files for each extension and category.
File Size: Shows the total storage used by files in each extension and category.
You can use up to 12 filters to control which file extensions appear in the treemap across all the options. These filters let you:
Set minimum thresholds for file count and total storage size.
Filter by file age and size.
The File Extension field lets you display data for just one extension. You might need to change other settings to prevent the extension specified from being filtered out.

Grid Settings
The following options are available for the grid view:
Show File Data Sums: For each file extension, list the total number of files and their total amount of storage. Two filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by number of files or aggregate size of those files.
Show File Age: For each file extension, list age information broken down into number of files of each age and aggregate size of files of each age. Six filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by various number, size, and age combinations.
Show File Storage: For each file extension, list storage information broken down into number of files of each size category and aggregate storage size of each size category. Six filters let you narrow the extensions displayed by various number, storage size, and size category combinations.
Show File Age and Storage: For each file extension, list both age and storage information. This is a combination of the previous two buttons.
To create more complex filters of the displayed data, click the Filter button and configure the conditions.
You can also sort the table data by Extension or by a selected Age or Storage column. To sort the data, click the desired column header. The direction of the arrow indicates whether the column is sorted in ascending or descending order.
